These hyena photos are all of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) which is the species commonly found in the game reserves and
national parks of southern Africa.
Other members of the Hyaenidae family are the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena), brown hyena (Hyaena brunnea), and
aardwolf (Protelas cristatus).
Spotted hyenas are highly gregarious, living in groups or "clans" led and dominated by females, which are larger and more aggressive
than males.
This species is mainly nocturnal but adults and their pups can also often be sighted during the day, especially in cooler weather.
The photos diplayed here were all taken in South Africa's Kruger National Park, where the hyenas have become used to vehicles and often live
in culverts under the network of roads.
