The Botswana safari pictures featured here were taken in a cross-section of the country's game reserves and wildlife sanctuaries, excluding the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Tuli Block areas. Below is brief information about the reserves: Moremi Game Reserve, which covers more than 4,000 sq km, was established in 1963 following its designation by Chief Moremi. As such it is the first wildlife sanctuary in southern Africa created by an indigenous tribe. Moremi lies in the eastern region of the renowned Okavango Delta and offers a combination of mopane woodland and acacia forests, plus the floodplains and lagoons characteristic of the delta. This mix of habitat is host to a wide diversity of fauna and flora, including 36 species of larger mammal, 80 species of fish and 400 different birds. Moremi is best visited in the dry season and game viewing is at its peak from July to October, when seasonal pans dry up and the wildlife concentrates on the permanent water. It is then that the wide variety of wildlife - elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal and a full range of antelope - is most accessible to visitors, thus providing the best opportunities for anyone keen to capture memorable Botswana Safari Pictures.. Sua Pan forms part of the Makgadikgadi Pans, the vast network of salt pans that cover 12,000 sq km of Botswana. These are some of the largest salt pans in the world and once deep inside them, there are few landmarks to guide you. The desolate landscape is occasionally broken by small "islands" of grass and trees, as in the baobab photo above. After the summer rains, the pans come to life, providing sustenance to migrating herds of zebra and wildebeest. If there is sufficient water, they also offer a temporary home to thousands of flamingoes. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary, situated near Serowe in eastern Botswana, is a small (4,300 ha) wildlife sanctuary established primarily as a breeding ground for white rhino. There is a Botswana Defence Force base close by which provides 24-hour protection against rhino poachers.
